Robert Harris (1849 - 1919)
The Charlottetown Pillory drawing ink wash and pencil on paper 21.2 x 22.2 cm A scene of public humiliation by an accused man in Charlottetown. The young man has been put on display for the purpose of public humiliation for his crime. Although the concept of public punishment may now seem strange, even barbaric, it was the accepted norm until the 19th century. It is only in recent times that prison has been used as a punishment.
